GE Grid Solutions Centre of Excellence

Grid Solutions is a GE and Alstom joint venture, serving customers globally with more than 20,000 employees in approximately 80 countries. Grid Solutions equip about 90% of the power utilities worldwide, bringing power from the point of generation to the end consumers. Due to continued growth and expansion, GE had a requirement to develop a new, purpose built state of the art headquarters to house its specialist Substation Automation Solutions business in Stafford.

GE wanted to remain in the Stafford area but relocate out of existing premises into a new facility that would provide a cutting edge, centre of excellence for over 1,100 employees. Their requirement was to house development, production, storage, testing operations with light assembly, office accommodation and training facilities. The hybrid nature of the development required a multitude of separate areas and environments.

Goodman put forward a bespoke solution for a 197,842 sq ft global centre of excellence to meet GE’s requirements. Construction commenced in July 2015 on receipt of planning and completed in August 2016. The new headquarters was completed in 48 weeks becoming fully operational by the end of 2016, creating an additional 400 jobs in the area.

Goodman are now developing an additional 180,000 sq ft manufacturing facility at Redhill Business Park next to the recently completed existing building. The state-of-the-art project will accommodate GE’s High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and Systems operations.

When both buildings are complete in 2017, the Redhill sites will be home to 1,100 of the 2,000 people which GE employs in the local area.
